Snapshots 2019: A Yearbook for DO-IT Participants

2019 DO-IT Trailblazers

Bree Callahan is a long time ally of DO-IT participants, collaborator on DO-IT projects, mentor to DO-IT staff, and member of the DO-IT Advisory Board. She currently serves as the ADA/Section 504 Coordinator for the ��ԭ�� (UW), after working for six years as the Director of UW Disability Resources for Students. She has completed work on two state legislative task forces that examine barriers for students with disabilities transitioning to ��ԭ�� State higher education institutions. She’s served as president of the ��ԭ�� Association on Postsecondary Education and Disability (WAPED) and as the chair of the standing committee on technology of the Association on Higher Education and Disabilities (AHEAD).

Lee Bassett, as a member of the DO-IT Advisory Board, has used his knowledge garnered from his many years as a special education professional to help students with disabilities. Lee has recruited qualified students from across ��ԭ�� State to apply to the DO-IT Scholars program. His career has included classroom teaching, vocational evaluation, district administration, research and development, and professional development of educators. He spent most of his career with the Seattle Public Schools and later joined the ��ԭ�� Research Institute as a senior researcher. After retiring, he continued working with Casey Family Programs’ leaders to develop and disseminate a model for college programs to better serve students formerly in foster care.

Vanessa Link, 2014 DO-IT Scholar and now DO-IT Ambassador, is a leader in the community through her disability advocacy and mentorship of younger Scholars. Vanessa graduated from Skagit Valley College with an associate degree and now attends the ��ԭ�� where she is pursuing a degree in disability studies. Since 2016 she has worked at Rooted in Rights designing products for disability rights organizations all over the country. A recent project that focused on what it is like to navigate Seattle using a wheelchair was featured in the Seattle Times and other media outlets. Her advocacy for inclusive and accessible environments is paving the way for future generations.

Phase I Scholars

Sixteen Phase I Scholars completed their first DO‑IT Summer Study session at the ��ԭ�� in July 2019. They learned about college life and prepared for college and careers. They continue to connect with each other and DO‑IT Mentors throughout the year.��They use laptops, assistive technology, and the internet to support their academic studies, and they participated in sessions in exciting fields that include science, engineering, mathematics, and technology.��After completing Summer Study 2019, these participants graduated to Phase II.

Aidan, ‘19 Scholar

Hello, I’m Aidan. I enjoy my classes at Sammamish High School, particularly in English and history. I love to read and write. I participate in both the journalism and debate clubs. For higher education, I’d like to focus on science, English, and history at a school like the ��ԭ�� or Whitman. I plan on earning a master’s degree in journalism. I like to travel and have been to Africa twice and visited Russia for the World Cup. My dream job is to own a bookstore or cafe and live upstairs with cats.

Alexis, ‘19 Scholar

Hi, my name is Alexis! I enjoy my classes in math and art at Mossyrock High School, but my main passion is drawing. I’d like to attend Digipen to pursue a bachelor’s degree in digital art and animation. My goal is to be an animator.�� I hope to have my own cartoon series online. I also play trombone in my school’s pep band, and I will be in the Knowledge Bowl next year. I enjoy video games, Dr. Who, and anime. I love musicals; my favorites are Little Shop of Horrors and Be More Chill. Before Summer Study, I participated in a two week drama workshop in Morton. I have autism.

Alison, ‘19 Scholar

Hello, my name is Alison, and I am proud that I am biracial! I attend Tahoma High School where I enjoy my classes in English and history. I am active in my church. I’m considering a career as a librarian because I enjoy reading, helping others, and doing research. I am also considering a career in human resources; or I may become an elementary school teacher because I love teaching young minds to learn and grow. I have an auditory processing disability.

Carlin, ‘19 Scholar

My name is Carlin. I attend the Science and Math Institute (SAMI) where my favorite classes are chemistry and guitar. I live in Tacoma. I am working on my Eagle rank in Boy Scouts of America. I would like to either become a park ranger or learn more about biomechanics in college. ��

David, ‘19 Scholar

Hi, I’m David. I enjoy science and history. I attend West Valley High School in Spokane. I have Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and autism. I volunteer at my local pet shelter to help animals in need. I am interested in the environment and everything else on our planet.

Grant, ‘19 Scholar

Hello! My name is Grant. I have autism and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to communicate. I enjoy being part of a large community at Bellevue High School, but I feel most at home working alongside other disability advocates, academics, and scientists to help others in the autism community. I am particularly interested in neurology and psychology, as well as meaningful discussions on any topic. I am interested in brain to computer interfaces so that I may talk more freely one day. At this point, I plan to pursue a liberal arts degree with a scientific focus.

Jacob, ‘19 Scholar

Hi, I’m Jacob! I want to focus my engineering and design passions on improving the design of transit systems and adaptive products. I attend Cleveland STEM High School in Seattle. I have Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Asperger’s syndrome. I have served as the Muscular Dystrophy Association’s local Good Will Ambassador, making public appearances, raising funds, and giving media interviews. I am also a professional DJ and like cats.

Kayla, ‘19 Scholar

Hello, my name is Kayla! I am most interested in English and the life sciences such as biology, earth and space science, anatomy and physiology, and neuroscience. I have a variety of potential career interests from neuroscience to real estate to education. Some of my favorite things are kittens, music, singing, and fuzzy blankets. I�� have low vision and oculocutaneous albinism. I attend Issaquah High School and Bellevue College, and have completed credit classes at both ��ԭ�� and Eastern ��ԭ�� University.

Kelvin, ‘19 Scholar

Hi, I’m Kelvin. I attend Cascade High School in Leavenworth where I enjoy studying science and digital art. My goal is to study sports management to become a soccer coach. I’m also a huge World Cup fan and have helped as an honorary assistant coach for the high school soccer team for two years. I have Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Merritt, ‘19 Scholar

Hi, my name is Merritt. I have autism. I am very interested in airplanes, birds, and wildlife. I hope to pursue a degree in the natural sciences to educate people about flora, fauna, animals, and history in a national park setting. I use photographic and audio recordings to capture my interest in the natural world. I also like to meditate. My favorite academic areas at Friday Harbor High School are history and environmental sciences. I am an avid reader and have been on honor roll three times this year. I love music and play both the piano and alto saxophone. I recently got my driver’s license. I have a pure French bulldog named Pippa and enjoy spending time with my family.

Norma, ‘19 Scholar

Hi, my name is Norma! I attend the Lummi Nation School in Bellingham. I enjoy playing video games, history, drawing, and music. I play the clarinet. I have a learning disability. I hope to begin Running Start next year and then pursue a career in the geosciences or biological sciences.

I’m Paula, and I attend the Lummi Nation School in Bellingham. I have a learning disability. I like music and I play the flute. I also enjoy drawing and playing video games. I hope to begin Running Start next year and then pursue a career in science or history.

Risa, ‘19 Scholar

Hi! My name is Risa. I attend The Community School in Spokane. I enjoy arts like sewing, mixed media, sculpting, and digital art/animation, as well as sciences such as biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering. I lived in Australia for a year and also have a terrier mix dog named Ernie. I have autism and narcolepsy.

Rohan, ‘19 Scholar

Hi, my name is Rohan. I attend Tesla STEM High School in Redmond where my two favorite subjects are science and mathematics. I hope to gain experience in computer science and have a career in the biomedical sciences. For the past two years, I have attended Boy Scout camp. I also spent a month in India this summer.

Sam, ‘19 Scholar

Hi, I’m Samuel. I enjoy my classes in the history of the Pacific Northwest and math. I am from China and can speak Chinese. I also participate in wheelchair basketball.

Phase II Scholars

Sixteen Phase II Scholars began participating in DO‑IT in 2018. Most completed their second Summer Study at the ��ԭ�� in July 2019.��During that second session, they continued to develop self‑determination and self-advocacy skills and prepare for college and careers. They worked closely with professionals or university faculty in STEM fields, such as robotics and video production. They use laptops, assistive technology, and the internet to support their academic studies, and they continue to connect with each other, DO-IT participants, and DO-IT Mentors throughout the year. After completing Summer Study 2019, these participants graduated to Phase III and Ambassadors.

Abby, ‘18 Scholar

Hi! I am Abby. I love throwing pottery on the wheel and hanging out with friends. I own two dogs who keep me busy. During the year I work at a sensor making factory and during the summer I work in a daycare. Last year, I went to state for speech and debate. I go to both Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences and Yellow Wood Academy. My disabilities are dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, severe food allergies, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.

Cheyann, ‘18 Scholar

Hello, my name is Cheyann. Last year, I studied math, science, English, Spanish, and fitness. I really like to learn about technology. In the past, I have studied computer applications and worked with programming LEGO MINDSTORMS. My favorite sports are power lifting and ballet. I am very interested in music, and I play ukulele, guitar, and piano. I love to sing and dance. My favorite animals are cats and horses; I hope to take horseback riding lessons. My favorite color is cotton candy pink. I also really love Disney, toys, and sparkles. I am super excited to attend this program again!

Dean, ‘18 Scholar

I’m Dean, and I graduated from Liberty Bell Junior-Senior High School in Winthrop, ��ԭ��. My disability is an autism spectrum disorder—an obstacle I work hard to get around and a gift that helps make me uniquely creative. My primary hobbies are creative writing, drawing anime-style art, and electronically composing music (check out Razorrekker on SoundCloud). I also enjoy being a sound tech for the local community theater and creating glitter tattoos. With luck, one day you’ll see my name in the film credits for composing a fantastic musical score! I was accepted into Central ��ԭ�� University’s Theater Design & Production Program and will be attending this fall.

Dillen, ‘18 Scholar

Hi! My name is Dillen. I am a student at Mt. Si High School in Snoqualmie. I have cerebral palsy. My favorite pastimes are reading about current events, talking with friends, and playing computer games. I’m very social so don’t be afraid to talk to and high-five me! Last year I took Advanced Placement computer science and plan to pursue that as my major.

Finn, ‘18 Scholar

Hello, my name is Finn. I am a senior at Sehome High School in Bellingham, ��ԭ��. My main interests are geopolitics, film, history, and science. I have been playing classical and jazz piano for many years. I’m a member of my school jazz band and an extracurricular combo group. I co-run the Model U.N. club at my high school, I was a mentor for a group of Korean students who visited Western ��ԭ�� University in July 2017 and July 2019, and I’m a member of a Spanish language-based volunteer club at my school called Club de Lectura. In January 2019 I produced a short film, and I currently run an ongoing movie review webseries on my YouTube channel. I have a form of muscular dystrophy called nemaline myopathy.

Ian, ‘18 Scholar

I am Ian, a deaf high schooler with intent to graduate and attend the ��ԭ��. I am striving to graduate with a degree focused on aerospace. The majority of my free time is spent keeping in touch with my close friends and sketching technical armored and aerospace concept vehicles; mostly my idea of what a vehicle and its performance would be like with technologies of past eras between 1941 and present day. I enjoy doing this while blasting excessive amounts of music by Groundbreaking.

Izzy, ‘18 Scholar

Hi! I am Izzy. I go to Port Townsend High School. I have dyslexia. My favorite classes are English and science. I play basketball and volleyball. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and exploring our town. I also love long walks on the beach. I hope to be a mental health counselor or a sports psychologist.

Jeremy, ‘18 Scholar

Hi, my name is Jeremy. I have autism, epilepsy, OCD, depression, heart murmur, and just recently was found out to be prediabetic. I am attending Bellingham Technical College in the fall and studying diesel mechanics. My dream in life is to make this a full time career. I also want to become famous with the rock band that I started over the past year.

Josh, ‘18 Scholar

Hi, my name is Joshua, and I am a student at Sammamish High School. I live in Bellevue. My favorite subjects in school are science and history. I would like to study aerospace engineering when I go to college. My hobbies include playing video games and making things with my hands. Some sports I participate in are archery, skiing, and swimming. My disabilities are arthrogryposis and scoliosis.

Kade, ‘18 Scholar

My name is Kade. I am a student at Stanwood High School. For three years I lived in Sumatra, Indonesia, where my parents were teachers. Spending time in other parts of the world has given me an appreciation for pursuing adventures, exploring new things, and interacting with different cultures and people. Even though I love traveling outside of the United States, my favorite place to travel is Disneyland during the Christmas season. My favorite sport is tennis, but I also like to play basketball. I like working with my hands and being creative. I also have a strong faith and am active in my church youth group. I have gone on several mission trips back to help children at an orphanage in Sumatra. My favorite school subjects are science, creative writing, and storytelling.

I am Nathan, a recent graduate from Edmonds-Woodway High School. I will enter college in fall 2019 majoring in architecture. I live in Seattle. I am a deaf person, and my favorite subjects are English and history.

My name is Oksana. I am a student at Lindbergh High School. I like hanging out outside, playing with my dog, socializing, and going on vacation. When I graduate from school I want to become a front desk assistant.

Hi! My name is Rebekah. I graduated from Zillah High School where I enjoyed studying language arts and math. I hope to be a counselor. I have a learning disability. I’m sorry to miss Summer Study this year because of college early start.

Torin, ‘18 Scholar

Greetings. My name is Torin. I go to Summit Sierra High School. I enjoy role-playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons, playing computer games, hanging out with friends, playing drums in a metal band, and writing short stories and poetry. My favorite type of food is gummy candy, especially the giant kind. My disability relates to the after-effects of cancer.

2019 Interns

After completing Phases I and II of the DO-IT Scholars program, seven Scholars and Ambassadors returned as Interns for Summer Study 2019. Interns help coordinate evening events and make sure Scholars are safe and on schedule. They provide invaluable insight and support throughout the two weeks, and act as role models and mentors to the younger Scholars by sharing their challenges and accomplishments. Interns also gain valuable work experience by providing logistical and program support to DO‑IT staff.

Phase III Scholars & Ambassadors

Phase III Scholars are completing high school or transitioning to college. Some become Interns at DO-IT Summer Study and participate in other work experiences. Phase III Scholars have attended multiple Summer Studies and shared in many classes, events, and activities.

Alex, ‘17 Scholar

Hello, my name is Alexander. I have been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy for 14 years. My time in DO-IT has given me the confidence to go into the Running Start program. I graduated from high school with an associate degree. I am now preparing to go to college in Tennessee. I intend to pursue a future in law and public administration. I was an Intern for Summer Study 2019.

Anna, ‘17 Scholar

Hi, my name is Anna. I graduated from Issaquah High School, where I participated in the National Honors Society and Strong4Sam Club. I want to start a club to support Camp Goodtimes, a pediatric oncology camp. I hope to pursue a career that allows me to help people. I also like to play the piano and have learned to play by ear. I am attending Brown University. I did an internship at the Center for Neurotechnology (CNT) at the ��ԭ�� this summer. I was an Intern for Summer Study 2019.

Camilo, ‘17 Scholar

Hi, my name is Camilo. My life goal is to work for a successful company, like Microsoft or Google, and to live as luxuriously as possible. I graduated from Spanaway Lake High School and have been working post-high school. I attend Pierce College. I like sports, specifically basketball and football. My favorite basketball player is LeBron James. I was an Intern for Summer Study 2019.

Desmond, ‘17 Scholar

Hi, my name is Desmond. I graduated from The Center School. I enjoy watching films and skateboarding. I have issues with speech and language. Last summer, I worked at All Together Skatepark and went to Portland to work for Skate Like A Girl.

Hello, my name is Hayley. I’m a student at Kamiakin High School in Kennewick, ��ԭ��. I will graduate next year with my cosmetology license. I had surgery at the age of six due to cerebral cavernous malformation. I enjoy dancing, creating choreography, tumbling, and listening to music. I was an Intern for Summer Study 2019.

Hi, my name is Jane. I graduated from The Center School. My favorite subjects are art and theater. I hope to become an actress, singer, or teach children to ride horses when I grow up. I love to draw, sing, and dance.

I’m Jono, and I have lived in Seattle my whole life. I graduated from The Northwest School, where I enjoyed studying the humanities. I now attend Seattle University. I love sports and cats. I have cerebral palsy.

Tycho, ‘17 Scholar

My name is Tycho, and I am deaf. I graduated from Chief Sealth International High School’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, and will be attending Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) starting in August 2019. I enjoy economics, Chinese, and chess, which are all logic-related things that come naturally to me. At RIT, I will be majoring in computer science. For fun, I enjoy playing chess and Dota 2, solving Rubik’s cubes, and reading.

Jesse A., ‘95 Scholar, spoke at the third annual Game Accessibility Conference (GAConf) as part of a panel on video games and virtual reality accessibility for Blind and low vision users.
Olivia W., ‘13 Scholar, got a job as a teaching assistant at Summit Atlas High School. She will be working in a small special education classroom helping middle school and high school aged students engage in the classroom and with assignments.
Angela M., ‘11 Scholar, got accepted to a PhD program in clinical psychology and will be starting at Seattle Pacific University in fall of 2019.
Hannah W., ‘13 Scholar, won the Dean’s Medal from the ��ԭ��’s College of Arts & Sciences in the Natural Sciences category for her academic excellence, leadership, and service.
Torin P., ‘18 Scholar, won first place in their age category at the Rising Voices Oratory competition.
Paige D., ‘11 Scholar, moved across the country from ��ԭ�� to Virginia and purchased a house.
Stuart O., ‘99 Scholar, spoke about his life experiences on an NPR radio program called “Sound Effect #156: Augmented Reality.” The segment was produced by Gabriel Spitzer and aired on KNKX radio April 2019.
Teresa B., ‘16 Scholar , was featured in The Seattle Times for her work on Seattle University’s dance team as well as her professional and academic success.
Jae K., ‘11 Scholar, won the Disability Rights ��ԭ�� Breaking Barriers Award, which honors an advocate with a disability for breaking barriers to advance the rights of and improve the lives of people with disabilities in ��ԭ�� State.
Anna O., ‘17 Scholar, was chosen for and completed an internship with the Center for Neurotechnology at the ��ԭ�� during the summer of 2019.

Adrian, ‘16 Scholar

Hello, my name is Adrian. I have been Deaf all my life. I graduated from Edmonds-Woodway High School. I now attend Seattle Central College and hope to transfer to Gallaudet University. I am excited to see where my path leads!

Bryce, ‘16 Scholar

Hi, my name is Bryce, and I am from Chelan, ��ԭ��. I graduated from Chelan High School in June 2017. I attend Spokane Community College and play for their tennis team. I plan to transfer to Eastern ��ԭ�� University to get a degree in business. After that I will return to Chelan to farm alongside my father.

Cameron, ‘16 Scholar

Hello, my name is Cameron. I graduated from Newport High School in Bellevue. I attend Northern Arizona University with the hope to one day be a history teacher. I am double majoring in history education and political science. I am in the National Honor Society. I love any American history or mathematics class. I was born with cerebral palsy. I use a wheelchair to travel around. In my free time, I enjoy playing video and board games.

Hi, my name is Jacky. I took classes at Clark College and am currently taking a break from school and working full-time as I consider what I want to study in the future. I enjoy playing sports, being with my friends, and listening to music. In the future, I would like to work for Microsoft, because they are interested in employing people who have my disability. I am a positive thinker, and I don’t let anything get me down or keep me from succeeding. I would also like to be a vlogger someday.

Jarrod, ‘16 Scholar

My name is Jarrod, and I graduated from West Seattle High School. I like history, drawing, and writing. I also like to watch anime and indie animations. I may pursue something in the arts, computer-aided design, social studies, politics, or voice acting. Currently I am working on building a personal computer.

Hi, my name is Jayda. I graduated from Mount Spokane High School and now attend Spokane Falls Community College. I have attention deficit disorder and dyslexia. My dyslexia comes up mostly when I’m doing math or sometimes with letters when I’m reading.

Hi, my name is Jon. I graduated from Oroville High School in 2017 where I was on the honor roll. I’m thinking about going to college to study radiology because of my knowledge of computers. I enjoy listening to heavy metal music and playing video games. I’ve been teaching myself how to play the keyboard.

My name is KyleeLynn, but most people call me “Ky.” I have spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. I have a sister named Katie who is also my best friend. My hobbies include drawing, listening to music, and questioning the universe. I now work at Walmart and plan to attend college when the time is right. Wish me luck!

My name is Micayla. I am a graduate of Ballard High School and am now attending Shoreline Community College. I like making art, reading, writing, and listening to music. I write fiction and hope to animate my own show someday. I am on the Special Olympics Women’s National Team. I have left hemiplegia from a stroke and seizures.

Naomi, ‘16 Scholar

Hey, my name is Naomi! I am a student at Cascadia College and an instructor at Seattle Acrobatics and New Circus Arts. I have devoted the last year to dancing, mostly hip-hop. I love American Sign Language, and I couldn’t live without my service dog, Libby the IV.

Rob, ‘16 Scholar

Hi, my name is Rob, and I live in Pullman, ��ԭ��. I graduated from Tesla STEM High School in Redmond in 2017 and now I am studying mechanical engineering at ��ԭ�� State University. I enjoy history, music, and baseball on top of STEM subjects. I participated in an internship with the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering in the summer of 2017.

Rochelle, ‘16 Scholar

I’m Rochelle. I graduated from the Center School in Seattle and am currently a student at North Seattle College. I am planning on transferring to the ��ԭ�� Seattle, to pursue a major in international relations and communications. In my educational history, I have worked on building relationships out of the country in Taipei, Beijing, Seoul, Osaka, and Kobe. I hope to work with companies and government programs abroad. Recently, I became a cat mom to a kitten named Igneous (Iggie). I was an Intern at Summer Study 2019.

Hi, I am Ryan! I live in Shoreline, ��ԭ��. I currently attend Shoreline Community College in their transition program. I have cerebral palsy. I enjoy hanging out with friends, playing video games, watching YouTube, and writing fiction stories.

In my three years at Duke, I have been to three different continents, including an internship at an internet of things startup in Ireland, a volunteer teaching experience in Nepal, and a study abroad in New Zealand. I helped run the second annual F*** Stairs campaign at the UW, which I helped create the year prior. The campaign asked able-bodied students to avoid using stairs for a month to showcase inaccessibility issues around campus. I remained on the UW Dean’s List through 2019. This past year I wrote a few books and several scripts featuring an LGBTQ+ wheelchair-user. When I graduate, I’m looking to move to Los Angeles for a graduate degree in animation, and to design disabled characters for the big screen. I’m a cripple punk, have spinal muscular atrophy type 2/3, and use a wheelchair.

Russell Taylor, ‘04 Scholar

Unfortunately, we must announce that Russell Taylor, one of DO‑IT’s cherished Scholars, passed away in May.

Russell graduated high school with an impressive 3.998 grade point average (GPA) and earned a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in Spanish from Pacific Lutheran University. Many Scholars may remember him from his participation in Summer Study in years 2004 and 2005. Russell tutored Spanish to college students and enjoyed creating art in both traditional and digital mediums. A majority of his illustrations depict breathtaking landscapes, many at locations that he had visited and seen himself. We here at DO-IT delighted in viewing his fantastic creations which can be found on his . Two examples of his art are shown to the right.

The memory of Russell’s intelligent and creative spirit will live on through his positive impact on others and beautiful artwork.

Ernie Butler, Advisory Board Member

We are sad to share the loss of past Advisory Board member, Ernest “Ernie” Butler. Ernie passed away last July after a long battle with cancer.

Many Scholars may remember Ernie not from Summer Study, but from Camp Access, an outdoor recreation-based summer camp for children with physical disabilities that he founded in 2002. Ernie was very passionate about bringing sports to people with disabilities, recognizing not only the value of physical activity and exercise, but also teamwork, which led to the creation of Camp Access. He is known for the quote, “Never confuse disability with inability,” which became the camp’s motto.

Ernie will be remembered for the amazing impact he had on the lives of people with disabilities, especially disabled veterans, nationwide.

Toby Olsen, DO-IT Mentor and Friend
DO-IT was sad to learn about the sudden passing of Toby Olson, the Executive Secretary of the ��ԭ�� State Governor’s Committee on Disability Issues and Employment (GCDE), last December.

Toby worked tirelessly to encourage public dialogue about disability issues and challenge faulty assumptions about the incredible talent and value of people with disabilities. Toby’s work also impacted many in the DO-IT community. For example, he oversaw the GCDE’s Youth Leadership Forum, in which many DO-IT participants have participated as delegates, interns, presenters, and members of the planning committee over the last 18 years.

Toby will be truly missed, but his legacy will live on in those he inspired to make the world more welcoming and accessible to individuals with disabilities.

Carl Dunlap, ‘14 Scholar
On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, Carl James Dunlap passed away suddenly from complications of Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Carl had recently celebrated his 21st birthday in Las Vegas.

Carl was about to start his senior year at the ��ԭ�� Foster School of Business. He attended Wellington Elementary, Leota Junior High (where he was student body president), and Woodinville High School (where he played in the drumline).�� He was DO-IT (Disabilities, Opportunities, Internetworking, Technology) Scholar and intern at UW.�� Carl loved hockey and had a wonderful experience as the debut Executive Track Internship Program intern for the Everett Silvertips. He was completing an outreach internship with the City of Kirkland at the time of his passing. He aspired to work in sports management and dreamed of being the youngest general manager in the National Hockey League.

Carl had a wide circle of great friends that he loved to hang out with and his passions included sports, video games, going to raves, and his dog Amy. He had a wicked sense of humor and an overwhelmingly positive approach to life. He said recently that this was one of his happiest times.��

Carl lived every day to the fullest and never let his physical challenges stand in his way. He had visited 16 countries and 17 states.

A quote often attributed to Abraham Lincoln reads “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years.” Carl and his family lived by this axiom and inspired others to do the same.��

They communicate online with each other and with DO‑IT Scholars, Ambassadors, Mentors, and staff members. My name is Sheryl Burgstahler, and I am the founder and director of the DO‑IT and Access Technology Centers at the ��ԭ�� (UW). I am also an affiliate professor in the College of Education. I have a master’s degree in mathematics and a PhD in policy, governance, and administration of higher education. DO-IT allows me to apply my personal, academic, and professional interests and experiences. I have a husband, Dave, and a son, Travis, who are both dedicated DO‑IT volunteers and UW Huskies. Dave is a professor of accounting, Travis is a manager at Amazon, and his wife Ashley is a manager within the risk assurance unit at PricewaterhouseCoopers. The ‘93 Scholars may remember Travis hanging around DO-IT Summer Study when he was three years old. DO-IT has been around a long time!

Hi! My name is Tami Tidwell. I am a counselor/coordinator for DO‑IT. Throughout the year, I enjoy working with high school and college students on topics like college admissions, scholarships, internships, employment, accommodations, and disclosure strategies. Being able to build long and lasting relationships is one of the best parts of working at DO-IT. Outside of work, I read a lot of audiobooks and ebooks, enjoy creating with friends, eating things from the garden, and playing with my cats and pup. I have dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and celiac. I am also hard of hearing. I have a degree in psychology from Texas Christian University. I was born and raised in Cowtown (a.k.a. Ft. Worth, TX).

My name is Terrill Thompson. I am the manager of the IT Accessibility Team for all of the ��ԭ��. I help educate K–12 and postsecondary educational institutions, technology vendors, government agencies, and others on how to ensure that technology is accessible to individuals with disabilities. I also teach accessible web design to students through our ongoing series of Web Accessibility Trainings. I live in Bellingham and work most of the time from an office at Western ��ԭ�� University. When I am not working, you can usually find me hiking in the mountains, playing guitar, or spending quality time with my family.
