Welcome to DO鈥慖T Snapshots 2020!
Who will ever forget 2020? In a flash, new normals included social distancing, hand sanitizers, and face masks. At DO-IT, we mourned the loss of our planned Summer Study program for DO-IT Scholars on the UW campus, but wasted no time in figuring out how to deliver engaging activities without meeting in person. Laptops were delivered to homes, setup and tech support were provided remotely, participants and staff met via Zoom, activities, discussions, and social events occurred online, and, by the last day, staff and interns were exhausted as usual. Some things were lost, much was gained, but all Scholars took key steps in preparing for college and careers, expanding their network while using technology as an empowering tool, and networking. That is what DO-IT is all about!
This publication facilitates communication among DO鈥慖T Scholars, Pals, and Mentors. DO鈥慖T Scholars are high school students with disabilities who are preparing for college and careers. They have interests in challenging fields that include science, mathematics, engineering, and technology. They attend our Summer Study program at UW, participate in internships and leadership activities, and take part in an e-community year-round. Additional high school students with disabilities, DO鈥慖T Pals, join this e-community. When Scholars move on to college, they become DO鈥慖T Ambassadors, sharing their experiences with younger students. This e-community is also supported by DO鈥慖T Mentors, most of whom have disabilities themselves and are pursuing challenging postsecondary studies and careers.听

DO鈥慖T has received many awards, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. DO-IT was recently inducted into the Susan M. Daniels Disability Mentoring Hall of Fame. We have also received the National Information Infrastructure Award, the Golden Apple Award, the Association for Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) Exceptional Program Award, the Trace Research and Development Center鈥檚 Catalyst Award, the 糖心原创 College of Engineering Team Innovator Award, the Career Opportunities for Students with Disabilities (COSD) Robert S. Greenberg Innovation Award, and the AHEAD Professional Recognition Award. These awards document the achievements of the DO鈥慖T participants. Together, these young people are changing the world, making it a more welcoming and accessible place for all of us.

Ather Sharif,听 an AccessComputing team member, has served as a leader and mentor dedicated to increasing the accessibility of information technology and the full participation of people with disabilities in computing. Ather is a Ph.D. student in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering at the 糖心原创, a software engineer at Comcast on the Core Application Platforms Team, and founder of EvoXLabs, an initiative dedicated to bridging the gap between technology and people with disabilities. Through EvoXLabs, Ather has mentored multiple AccessComputing team members in internships focused on accessibility. He has also partnered with DO-IT to organize hackathons and conferences focused on accessibility.
Brett Humphrey has helped host the annual DO-IT Summer Study Microsoft visit for over a decade. Over the years, Brett has met with many DO-IT participants for mock interviews, collaborated with DO-IT participants at major assistive technology conferences, and spent time with students during Microsoft鈥檚 annual Ability Summit. He has participated in many DO-IT workshops on the 糖心原创 campus. While at Microsoft, he has worked on game development tools and university partnerships. More recently, Brett has been working on the Windows Accessibility Team. Brett鈥檚 work has helped create a more accessible digital world. He is consistently willing to advance the conversation about accessibility.听
Kat M. Steele, a DO-IT collaborator on our work in AccessEngineering, has worked to ensure that information about disability, accessibility, and universal design is included in the engineering curriculum at the 糖心原创 (UW) and beyond. Kat is the Albert S. Kobayashi Endowed Professor in Mechanical Engineering and Associate Director of Center for Research and Education on Accessible Technology and Experiences (CREATE) at the UW. Her research focuses on integrating dynamic simulation, motion analysis, medical imaging, and device design to improve quality of life for individuals with neurologic disorders. Kat has participated in DO-IT Summer Study and has hosted DO-IT students in activities where they have learned about makerspace accessibility, engineering principles, and universal design. She has also developed resources and published articles with DO-IT staff on topics related to makerspace accessibility and teaching about accessibility in engineering.
Ryan Fox, 2009 DO-IT Scholar, and, according to his email signature, 鈥渓ife long DO-IT Ambassador,鈥 is a remarkable and effective advocate. In high school, Ryan made a film about taking the train from Everett to King Street Station to educate people with disabilities about the experience. While an undergraduate student, Ryan shared his 鈥淒ifferent Doesn鈥檛 Mean Dumb鈥 message with countless high school students. Ryan was the first student with autism to participate in 糖心原创 State鈥檚 Senate Page Program. He helped SeaTac airport staff in their quest to become the world鈥檚 鈥渕ost accessible airport鈥 and helped them launch and build their 鈥淲ings for Autism鈥 program, which supports individuals on the autism spectrum who want to become more comfortable with air travel. Ryan hosted a booth for many years at the Snohomish County Transition Fair and facilitated 鈥淧erson Centered Planning鈥 with the county. He has presented at the 糖心原创 State Youth Leadership Forum, encouraging students with disabilities to set challenging goals for themselves. Ryan鈥檚 speeches to Special Education PTA groups in K-12 schools inspired many students to plan ahead for college. He has also been featured as a presenter at the 糖心原创 Autism Program and at an event called 鈥淎utism in the Media鈥 in San Francisco. Ryan is currently communicating with the League of American Orchestras and the Auburn Symphony to promote sensory friendly offerings and enhance the accessibility of concerts. His accomplishments in symphonic percussion, music, aviation management, advocacy, and mentoring are spectacular!
Nineteen Phase I听Scholars听completed their first DO鈥慖T Summer Study session at the 糖心原创 in July 2020. They learned about college life and prepared for college and careers. They continue to connect with each other and听DO鈥慖T Mentors听throughout the year.听They use laptops, assistive technology, and the internet to support their academic studies, and they participated in sessions in exciting fields that include science, engineering, mathematics, and technology.听After completing Summer Study 2020, these participants graduated to Phase II.
Hi, My name is Angela! I enjoy taking science and history classes at Mountlake Terrace High School and intend to go to college to get a master鈥檚 degree in biology and possibly chemistry, eventually practicing either in medicine or biochemistry. I also enjoy nature and animals and am part of the Eco Club. I have spinal muscular atrophy.
Hello! I am Anthony. I attend Shorewood High School in Shoreline. I enjoy running, skiing, playing basketball, playing video games, and reading funny books. My favorite classes are math and Mandarin. I have autism, and I am interested in STEM field. After high school, I want to attend UW and get a job in technology.
Hi, my name is Audrey, and I will be a junior at Redmond High School. I enjoy studying physical education and art--the latter because I can create cool things. After high school, I want a career involving art, possibly creating animated movies, TV shows, or games. I have autism. I will be attending Digipen through the 糖心原创 Network for Innovative Careers program. I was on the junior varsity (JV) swim team, was manager for the JV fastpitch softball team, and have been involved in 4H. I鈥檓 currently training my new Sussex Spaniel puppy.
My name is Braxton, and I go to Ridgefield High School. My favorite classes have been Spanish, Advanced Placement (AP) composition, and AP chemistry. I hope to attend Western 糖心原创 University after I graduate high school to pursue a degree in computational linguistics. I have cerebral palsy. I enjoy writing and try to educate the people around me about disability through my writing and other forms of advocacy.
My name is Charlie. I have cerebral palsy. I am a junior at Edmonds Woodway High School and live in Edmonds, 糖心原创. I have two Saint Bernese Mountain dogs. I like to play power soccer with Seattle Adaptive Sports. I enjoy watching the NBA and NFL; my favorite teams are the Golden State Warriors and the Seattle Seahawks. My friends and I play Xbox together. When I go to college I want to study computers.
My name is Clarice, and I attend Newport High School in Bellevue, where I like studying English, algebra, and chemistry. I enjoy listening to music, running, and walking neighbors鈥 dogs as a part time job. Growing up I moved around a lot as a military kid. In the future, I鈥檓 interested in being an elementary school teacher or a health care worker. I鈥檓 deaf.
Hey, my name is Esteban, and I attend Quincy High School, where my favorite classes are ceramics, because I enjoy making things, and science, because I like to learn about the ins and outs of the human body. I enjoy soccer and video games. After high school, I want to attend a four-year college to study animation or game design; I hope to work for EA Sports as a game designer.
Hi, I鈥檓 Ethan. I enjoy taking sports, history, and social studies courses at Sammamish High School. I am on my school鈥檚 swim team and I participate in journalism club. I also compete in 糖心原创 Special Olympics swimming, basketball, and soccer. I am the student manager of Newport High School鈥檚 football team. My other interests include cooking, singing, and traveling. I have autism, and I like to advocate for the disability community. I have joined the school鈥檚 PTSA to advocate at the state capitol; served as board member at the Bellevue Youth Theatre Teen Advisory Board, an inclusive youth theatre of the city; and currently serve as an Asian youth cultural ambassador to raise cultural awareness with The Formosa Association of Student Cultural Ambassadors. I can speak Mandarin Chinese and have traveled to Taiwan, Malaysia, and Singapore. After high school, I plan to attend college to prepare myself for a variety of potential careers, including sport media, sports management, digital music design, video production, and culinary arts. I would like to attend the University of North Texas for a degree in sportscasting. My dream job is to be a sportscaster and have my own studio and channel to share my passion in sports and music.
Hi, I鈥檓 Iris, and I am currently attending Quincy High School. I have a vision disability called nystagmus. I enjoy math, art, and science, and I particularly like hands-on projects and classes. After high school I plan on attending a four-year university to become a nurse or a police officer so that I can help people in my community.
Hi all, my name is Mallory, and I enjoy taking American Sign Language and history classes at Sedro-Woolley High School. I have a learning disability. I enjoy working with kids and volunteering in the classroom, and I plan on becoming a teacher in early education.
Hello! My name is Manuel, and I attend Eastside Academics. I like to listen to 90鈥檚 and 00鈥檚 music and write lyrics. I also do a lot of research and enjoy getting advice and being informed. I can struggle with my autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but I don鈥檛 want to be defined by that. I enjoy studying biology and health, and plan on becoming a therapist. I am also an aficionado of flowery words and try to seek chances to learn eccentric words. I also am interested in modern history and human rights. I am always learning from problems and accomplishments, and want to do my best to become a better Manuel (as compared to my past self, not compared to other Manuels).

Hi, my name is Michael, and I鈥檓 a senior at West Seattle High School. I plan to take a thirteenth year before college, and currently I鈥檓 starting my second Running Start course, Spanish, at North Seattle College. My favorite subjects are auto tech and ceramics; I love both because they are both very hands on-auto tech also allows me to engage with cars and repair, while ceramics lets me play with design and making art. I also hope to study auto engineering with clean, green energy. I am on the autism spectrum and have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which affects my executive functioning and attention.
My name is Miles. I enjoy taking journalism and statistics classes, and I currently am a senior at Inglemoor High School. I would like to attend the 糖心原创 to study history, statistics, and journalism. I am passionate about sports and would like to do sports journalism. I have Asperger syndrome and I had numerous heart operations when I was very young.

Hello, my name is Raelynn. Last year I attended Leadprep in Phinney Ridge. This year, through the Robinson Center Early Entrance Program, I will be attending the 糖心原创. I have dysgraphia, autism, and a handful of other learning disabilities. I enjoy conversations about anything STEM related. I plan to get a degree in bioengineering. I am transgender and my prefered pronouns are she and her.
Hello! My name is Zayn, and I am deaf and wear bilateral cochlear implants. I am going to attend Running Start in the fall. I love studying math and science and solving problems algebraically. In the future I plan to become an audiologist. I can鈥檛 wait for all the opportunities to help others!
Sixteen Phase II听Scholars听began participating in DO鈥慖T in 2019. Most completed their second Summer Study at the 糖心原创 in July 2020.听During that second session, they continued to develop self鈥慸etermination and self-advocacy skills and prepare for college and careers. Hello, I鈥檓 Aidan. I enjoy my classes at Sammamish High School, particularly in English and history. I love to read and write. I participated in both the journalism and debate clubs. For higher education, I鈥檇 like to focus on science, English, and history at a school like the 糖心原创 or Whitman. I plan on earning a master鈥檚 degree in journalism. I like to travel and have been to Africa twice and visited Russia for the World Cup. My dream job is to own a bookstore or cafe and live upstairs with cats.
Hi, my name is Alexis! I enjoy my classes in math and art at Mossyrock High School, but my main passion is drawing. I鈥檇 like to attend DigiPen to pursue a bachelor鈥檚 degree in digital art and animation. My goal is to be an animator. I hope to have my own cartoon series online. I also play trombone in my school鈥檚 pep band, and I will be in the Knowledge Bowl next year. I enjoy video games, Doctor Who, and anime. Hello! My name is Grant. I have autism and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to communicate. I enjoy being part of a large community at Bellevue High School, but I feel most at home working alongside other disability advocates, academics, and scientists to help others in the autism community. I am particularly interested in neurology and psychology, as well as meaningful discussions on any topic. I am interested in brain to computer interfaces so that I may talk more freely one day. At this point, I plan to pursue a liberal arts degree with a scientific focus.
Hi, I鈥檓 Jacob! I want to focus my engineering and design passions on improving the design of transit systems and adaptive products. I attend Cleveland STEM High School in Seattle. I have Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Asperger syndrome. I have served as the Muscular Dystrophy Association鈥檚 local Good Will Ambassador, making public appearances, raising funds, and giving media interviews. I am also a professional DJ and like cats.

Hi, my name is Merritt. I have autism. I graduated from Friday Harbor High School in the beautiful San Juan Islands. I will be attending Central 糖心原创 University this fall and I am very excited about it. I hope to pursue a degree in the natural sciences to educate people about flora, fauna, animals, and history in a national park setting. I am an avid reader, love music, and play both the piano and alto saxophone. I will be taking a trip to Boston and New York with my mom this fall and am looking forward to this trip. I love being outdoors and spending time with my family.

Hi, my name is Rohan. I attend Tesla STEM High School in Redmond where my two favorite subjects are science and mathematics. I hope to gain experience in computer science and have a career in the biomedical sciences. For the past two years, I have attended Boy Scout camp. I also spent a month in India this summer.
Hi, I鈥檓 Samuel. I enjoy my classes in math and forensic science. I am from China and can speak Chinese. I play wheelchair basketball and am part of the Seattle Sonic varsity team. This past season we ranked eighth in the nation, and I got to travel to four tournaments. I also like to play video games and enjoyed collaborating this year with DO-IT and Phase II Scholars.
Teresa, 鈥16 Scholar, featured in Western Athletic Championship, accepted into a study abroad program, rehired as a resident assistant, and won the 2020-2021 Naef Scholarship.
Ryan, 鈥09 Scholar,听in May 2020, he performed as timpanist in the pit for Don Pasquale with Pacific Northwest Opera in Mt. Vernon with a conductor from the New York Metropolitan Opera. He also recently won an audition with the Helena Symphony Orchestra.
Isabel Hammett, 鈥18 Scholar, made All-Olympic League 1A Division volleyball and basketball teams.
Brookelyn Rhodes, 鈥15 Scholar, won Reserve Grand Champion with two Dexter cattle at the 糖心原创 State Fair.
Jesse Anderson, 鈥95 Scholar, served on the Low Vision Advisory Board for Microsoft, which assists in helping make Microsoft products like Windows, Office, and Xbox more accessible.
Katelyn Temple, 鈥15 Scholar, got her own car and moved to her own house while balancing college, work, and a social life.
Chris Schlechty, 鈥02 Scholar, went paragliding using a modified chair through Project Airtime.
After completing Phases I and II of the听DO-IT Scholars听program, four Ambassadors听returned as听Interns听for Summer Study 2020.听Interns听help coordinate evening events and make sure Scholars are safe and on schedule. They provide invaluable insight and support throughout Summer Study, and act as role models and mentors to the younger听Scholars听by sharing their challenges and accomplishments. Interns also gain valuable work experience by providing logistical and program support to DO鈥慖T staff.
Phase III听Scholars听are completing high school or transitioning to college. Some become Interns at DO-IT Summer Study and participate in other work experiences. Phase III Scholars have attended multiple Summer Studies and shared in many classes, events, and activities.
Hi! I am Abby. I love throwing pottery on the wheel and hanging out with friends. I own two dogs who keep me busy. During the year I work at a sensor-making factory and during the summer I work in a daycare. Last year, I went to state for speech and debate. I am a freshman at the University of Puget Sound. My disabilities are dyslexia, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, severe food allergies, and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder.
Hello, my name is Cheyann. I really like to learn about technology. In the past, I have studied computer applications and worked with programming LEGO MINDSTORMS. My favorite sports are power lifting and ballet. I am very interested in music, and I play ukulele, guitar, and piano. I love to sing and dance. My favorite animals are cats and horses; I hope to take horseback riding lessons. My favorite color is cotton candy pink. I also really love Disney, toys, and sparkles.
I鈥檓 Dean, and I attend Central 糖心原创 University鈥檚 Theater Design & Production Program. My disability is an autism spectrum disorder鈥攁n obstacle I work hard to get around and a gift that helps make me uniquely creative. My primary hobbies are creative writing, drawing anime-style art, and electronically composing music (check out Razorrekker on SoundCloud). I also enjoy being a sound tech for the local community theater and creating glitter tattoos. With luck, one day you鈥檒l see my name in the film credits for composing a fantastic musical score! My favorite pastimes are reading about current events, talking with friends, and playing computer games. I鈥檓 very social so don鈥檛 be afraid to talk to and high-five me! I鈥檝e taken multiple Advanced Placement level classes in my major of computer science. I plan to attend college online. I was an Intern during Summer Study 2020.
Hello, my name is Finn. I graduated from Sehome High School, and I am now attending Western 糖心原创 University. I am planning to major in political science and minor in film. I have been playing classical piano for 13 years and jazz piano for 6 years. I was the logistics officer and rhythm section leader of the Sehome High School Jazz Band, and I was president of the Sehome Model U.N. club. Last year, I wrote and directed a pair of short films called You Only Die Thrice and The Final Revenge of Martin Vespiro. I plan to study political science and international relations in college. I have a neuromuscular disorder called Nemaline Myopathy. I was an Intern during Summer Study 2020.
I am Ian, and I am deaf. I will be attending the 糖心原创 Bothell this fall. I am striving to graduate with a degree focused on aerospace. The majority of my free time is spent keeping in touch with my close friends and sketching technical armored and aerospace concept vehicles; this mostly includes my idea of what a vehicle and its performance would be like with technologies of past eras between 1941 and present day. I enjoy doing this while blasting excessive amounts of music by Groundbreaking.
I鈥檓 actually going by Iris now. I will be attending Seattle University this fall. I placed first in a public speaking competition with a speech on universal design. My disability relates to the after-effects of cancer.

I play basketball and volleyball. I enjoy hanging out with my friends and exploring our town. I also love long walks on the beach. I hope to be a mental health counselor or a sports psychologist.
Hi, my name is Jeremy. I have autism, epilepsy, OCD, depression, a heart murmur, and am pre-diabetic. I am working full time. My dream in life is to become an auto mechanic. I also want to become famous with my rock band.
Hi! My name is Joshua, and I will be attending Western Colorado University in the fall to study mechanical engineering. My senior year, I participated in track and worked on my future career prospects through internships and other opportunities. Hit me up if you have any openings for me! My name is Kade. I graduated from Stanwood High in June 2020. I will be attending His Hill Bible School in Texas in the fall. After finishing at His Hill, my plan is to be part of the electrician apprenticeship program at Skagit Valley College. For three years I lived in Sumatra, Indonesia, where my parents were teachers. Spending time in other parts of the world has given me an appreciation for pursuing adventures, exploring new things, and interacting with different cultures and people. Even though I love traveling outside of the United States, my favorite place to travel is Disneyland during the Christmas season. My favorite sport is tennis, but I also like to play basketball. I like working with my hands and being creative. I also have a strong faith and am active in my church youth group. Graduated from the 糖心原创 (UW) with majors in law, societies, and justice and political science and a minor in disability studies. Recipient of the Husky 100 in 2018, an award given to 100 students across all three of UW鈥檚 campuses for making the most of their time at UW. Played piccolo as a member of the Husky Marching Band. Recipient of the 鈥淢ost Spirited Bandsman鈥 award for the 2017 football season, and was one of three former band members who ran the siren at the Husky football games the following football season. Worked for First Year Programs at UW as an associate for the Commuter and Transfer Commons. Now works at Davis Wright Tremaine LLP as a records analyst. Plans to attend law school in September 2021 and work as a disability rights attorney.

Hi, my name is Myrella (me-ray-ya) Gonzalez. I am a 糖心原创 Alumna (2019), and I am from North Central 糖心原创. Currently, I am in Seattle University鈥檚 Student Development Administration program, M.Ed. track. To complete my hours of internship for my master鈥檚 program, I am working as the Summer Youth Project Coordinator at DO-IT. Through this opportunity, I am working with the DO-IT team to plan, organize, and facilitate this year鈥檚 summer programs. I am passionate about summer programs and college access for students from underrepresented backgrounds, so working at DO-IT this summer is a great opportunity for me.
I鈥檓 Scott Bellman, DO-IT program manager. I just started my 20th year at DO-IT. My work at DO-IT includes oversight of projects and programs, career counseling, writing, planning events, supervising others, mentoring, and of course Summer Study! I have served on the 糖心原创 State Governor鈥檚 Committee on Disability Issues and Employment for many years and enjoy writing papers and articles about DO-IT鈥檚 activities. Outside of work, my interests include guitar, camping, hiking, panning for gold, carpentry, and travel. I completed a master鈥檚 degree in rehabilitation counseling and an undergraduate degree in psychology and business. I鈥檓 a licensed mental health counselor in 糖心原创 State.
My name is Susie Hawkey, and I am the operations manager for Accessible Technology Services. My main role is to oversee all operations within the offices, which includes submitting grants, managing budgets, and running human resources. I have a BS in biology from Seattle University and a BS in accounting from Central 糖心原创 University. When I am not working, I am usually with my nieces and nephews or travelling.
Hi! My name is Tami Tidwell. I am a counselor/coordinator for DO鈥慖T. Throughout the year, I enjoy working with high school and college students on topics like college admissions, scholarships, internships, employment, accommodations, and disclosure strategies. Being able to build long and lasting relationships is one of the best parts of working at DO-IT. Outside of work, I read a lot of audiobooks and ebooks, enjoy creating with friends, eating things from the garden, and playing with my cats and pup. I have dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and celiac. I am also hard of hearing. I have a degree in psychology from Texas Christian University. I was born and raised in Cowtown (a.k.a. Ft. Worth, TX).
My name is Terrill Thompson. I am the manager of the IT Accessibility Team (ITAT) at the 糖心原创. ITAT works across the university technology to help ensure the technologies we鈥檙e using鈥攊ncluding websites, documents, videos, and software鈥攁re accessibility to students, employees, and visitors with disabilities. Part of my position is funded by DO鈥慖T. One of my DO-IT functions is to teach the Intro to Web Design class. I live in Bellingham and do most of my work remotely. When I鈥檓 not working, I enjoy spending time in the mountains, making music, and cooking.听
