Preparing for Success with Work-Based Learning Experience

The following template has been used by the DO-IT Center to recruit new partners who have the potential to provide work-based learning experiences to students with disabilities. The template has been shared with employers during job fairs, at conferences, and in the community. The template can be adapted and used by other organizations who wish to replicate this "menu-based" recruiting strategy.

Work-related experiences during school are associated with better employment outcomes for students with disabilities. We would encourage you and others in your organization to take advantage of one or more of the work experience options listed below.Ìý

_____ÌýInformational Interview:ÌýProvide an individual with a disability the chance to engage with your staff members to find out more about your industry and organization.

_____ÌýMock Interview:ÌýProvide an individual with a disability the chance to practice their interview skills and receive feedback from your organization.

_____ÌýJob Fair:ÌýTake part in a job fair for job seekers with disabilities. Host a table and talk with candidates about their experience and goals.

_____ÌýPresentation:ÌýOffer a presentation about your industry or organization to a group of individuals with disabilities.

_____ÌýJob Shadow:ÌýInvite an individual with a disability to observe one of your employees at work and hear information from that employee about the nature of their job.

_____ÌýInternship: Arrange a paid or unpaid internship for a student with a disability seekingÌý"real world" experience in their academic field.Ìý

_____ÌýMentorship:ÌýIdentify employees with and without disabilities in your organizationÌýwho would be willing to act as a mentor to a less experienced person with a disability.Ìý
