Summer Study 2022 - Thursday, July 14
Phase 1:
FIXED Viewing: Researchers around the world are hard at work developing technologies to 鈥渇ix鈥 or 鈥渆nhance鈥 the human body. During this session, Scholars will share their thoughts about this complex topic and think about some of the ethical implications inherent in new technology. Together online, Scholars will watch the critically-acclaimed movie FIXED: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement. After the movie, Scholar groups will assemble in Zoom breakout rooms to answer questions about topics presented in the film.
Phase 1:
Discussion of FIXED:聽After lunch, Scholar groups will assemble in Zoom breakout rooms to answer questions about topics presented in the film.
- Human beings are an incredibly varied bunch. So what does it mean to be 鈥渘ormal?鈥 Why do you think definitions of 鈥渘ormal鈥 vary so greatly?
- If you could change one thing about your body or your abilities, what would you change?
- From botox to bionic limbs, the human body is more 鈥渦pgradeable鈥 than ever. But how much of it can we alter and still be human? What do we gain or lose in the process?
- If new technologies can enhance human capabilities to make them smarter, faster, etc- how do you think that would change the conversation about being 鈥渁ble-bodied鈥 or 鈥渘ormal鈥 or 鈥渄isabled?鈥
Phase 1:
Canvas Chat (optional): For this optional activity, Scholars are encouraged to visit the Canvas discussion board from 4pm-5pm to share their thoughts on one or more of the following topics:
- What is a memorable school experience you participated in in elementary, middle, or high school? Choose from the following:
- A field trip, such as to the zoo, science center, a museum, an outdoor activity/camp, or somewhere else
- Sports game you either watched or played in
- Assembly, such as a guest聽speaker
